A food label can answer practical questions about a product: what is in it, how to store it and how to prepare it. Start with the question relevant to your purchase. A prominent slogan on the front is not a substitute for reading the information you need.
Check suitability first
Look at the ingredients and allergen information, especially if you are choosing for someone with specific requirements. Packaging and recipes can change, so a familiar brand does not remove the need to check. Ask the person what is suitable rather than making assumptions on their behalf.
Read the preparation and storage instructions too. A product that needs equipment or refrigeration you do not have may not be convenient for the meal you are planning.
Compare similar products fairly
If you compare nutrition panels, make sure you are looking at equivalent quantities and the same type of food. Serving sizes can differ between products. Consider the information in context rather than selecting one number and treating it as a complete judgement.
General public-health guidance can provide background, but a label cannot tell you everything about your own dietary needs. If you have been given specific professional guidance, use that rather than a broad shopping article.
Check whether the product fits your week
Look at package size, dates and what happens after opening. A product may appear economical but still be a poor fit if you cannot use or store it appropriately. Decide where it belongs in a planned meal or regular routine.
Keep the process proportionate. You do not need to turn every shop into a detailed analysis. Focus on the information that affects suitability, safety and the decision in front of you, and seek clarification when the label does not answer an important question.
Common questions
Should I choose food based only on a claim on the front of the pack?
No. Check the ingredients, relevant allergen information and preparation or storage instructions. If comparing nutrition information, compare similar foods on an equivalent basis and consider your individual needs.
