Gratitude journaling means recording something you appreciate. It does not require you to declare the whole day good or dismiss a difficult experience. A useful entry can be specific and modest: a thoughtful message, a working kettle or a moment when someone made space for you.
Describe the detail
Instead of writing “friends”, describe what a friend did and why it mattered. “They remembered I had a busy afternoon and brought the parcel inside” tells you more when you read it later. Small details can make the practice feel less like completing a generic list.
There is no need to find a dramatic lesson. You can appreciate a convenient bus connection or a meal you enjoyed. If nothing comes to mind, leave the page blank rather than inventing an answer.
Allow two truths on the page
Try separating your entry into “something difficult” and “something I appreciated”. The sections do not cancel each other out. You might be disappointed about a cancelled plan and appreciate the friend who checked in afterwards.
Avoid comparing your difficulties with someone else's to make yourself feel obliged to be thankful. The exercise is about attention and description, not deciding whose experience deserves concern.
Decide whether to share it
Some gratitude belongs in a private notebook. Other entries might become a simple thank-you message. If you send one, describe the action without expecting a particular response: “Thanks for making time to explain that form. It helped me know what to do next.”
Try the exercise occasionally before making it a daily commitment. If it becomes repetitive or uncomfortable, change the prompt or take a break. A notebook can hold mixed experiences; it does not need to become a record of constant optimism.
Common questions
Can I write about a bad day in a gratitude journal?
Yes. You can acknowledge difficulty alongside appreciation, or skip gratitude entirely that day. The exercise should not pressure you to minimise your own or someone else’s experience.
