Reset your notifications one category at a time

Review which alerts need immediate attention, keep essential access in mind and remove interruptions that do not serve your current routine.

A notification reset means reviewing which alerts deserve immediate attention and which can wait until you open an app. You do not need to switch everything off at once. Start with one category and keep essential work, caring or accessibility needs in view.

Sort alerts by purpose

Separate direct messages, time-sensitive information and promotional updates. The right settings depend on your responsibilities. A family contact, calendar reminder and shopping promotion are not necessarily equally urgent.

Choose one app and inspect its settings. Some allow different types of alerts rather than a single on-or-off choice. If a setting is unclear, check the app's current documentation before changing it.

Try a reversible adjustment

Turn off or reduce a non-essential category for a few days, then notice what you miss. Keep a record of the change so it is easy to reverse. Avoid making a large collection of settings changes that you cannot remember later.

If other people rely on a quick response, explain when and how they can reach you. A quieter phone is not useful if it silently breaks an arrangement you need to maintain.

Choose when you will check

Removing an alert does not necessarily remove the need to read the information. Decide whether a regular check makes sense. You might review a non-urgent inbox at a suitable point in the day rather than whenever a badge appears.

Assess whether the new arrangement fits your routine. This is a practical preference exercise, not a claim that a particular number of notifications determines wellbeing. Keep the settings that help you use the device for your purposes and revise them when those purposes change.

Common questions

Should I turn off every notification?

Not necessarily. Keep alerts you need for safety, responsibilities, accessibility or important communication. Review categories selectively and test changes you can reverse.
