Personal values are qualities or priorities you want to reflect in your choices. Words such as care, curiosity and fairness can be useful, but they become clearer when you describe what they look like in an ordinary situation. Values are a guide, not a scorecard for judging every moment.
Start with examples you recognise
Think of a recent choice you felt comfortable with. Perhaps you asked a question instead of pretending to understand, or made time to return a borrowed item. What quality did that action express? Working from examples can be easier than choosing impressive words from a long list.
Write a short explanation beside each value. “Simplicity” might mean fewer overlapping commitments. For someone else, it could mean a clearer filing system. Your definition should connect to your life.
Use values to compare options
When deciding between two ordinary choices, ask how each fits your priorities and constraints. You may value both connection and rest. Accepting every invitation does not automatically honour one more than the other; you might choose a shorter visit or another day.
The aim is not to find a perfect answer. Values can conflict, and practical limits still matter. Naming the trade-off can make a decision easier to explain to yourself.
Choose one expression for the week
Pick a small action that reflects a value. Curiosity could mean asking someone how they learned a skill. Care could mean checking what would actually be helpful before offering assistance. Fairness could mean sharing an inconvenient task.
Review the action without turning a missed opportunity into a judgement about your character. You can make another choice next time. Over time, values become useful through the decisions they inform, not through how elegantly you describe them in a notebook.
Common questions
Can my values change over time?
Yes. Your understanding and priorities can shift with experience and circumstances. Revisit the words occasionally and update the examples rather than treating an old list as a permanent identity.
